Urdu has a singular distinction of being our national language. It was developed during the last 1000 years and has its origin in a number of languages e.g. Sanskrit, Turkish, Persian and Arabic. It has absorbed words from English and other regional languages. It is widely spoken in Pakistan, India and Middle East. The Department of Urdu at Lahore Leads University has been established with a view to promote its language and literature. The department has designed various new courses, like, Computer Literacy, translation, communication skills and script writing. The department is making every effort to encourage and nourish creative talent as well as research aptitude of students by offering programs at BS and MPhil levels. That is why the scheme of studies of MPhil program is designed in such a way that it may cater to the needs of prospective researchers in this vital national discipline. Urdu is in dire need to have a new generation of young enthusiastic scholars and researchers to take the place of the old guards who, of course, made tremendous contributions to develop Urdu as a language. The present global surge in linguistic studies is a challenge that Urdu scholars need to meet with scientific research. The history of nations who have made a mark in the fields of natural and social sciences is witness to the fact that without developing their national language a nation cannot make progress and compete in the polity of nations.
